Chapter 13
The atmosphere between Lin Yuzhen and Jiang Ning was awkward but tinged with confusion and disbelief. Lin Yuzhen was still grappling with the fact that Jiang Ning, the man who had once seemed so helpless and homeless, had bought her a BMW. It felt like a surreal shift in reality, as if the man she’d known just days ago had transformed into someone unrecognizable. Her mind kept circling back to one question: How?
She couldn’t believe he had spent nearly half a million on a car just for her, and yet he remained so casual about it. She hadn’t even thought about what it would mean for her family, especially her mother, who would definitely be shocked.
The auntie’s jealousy was palpable, but Lin Yuzhen could hardly focus on her. Instead, she focused on the fact that Jiang Ning—this mysterious, seemingly out-of-place man—had done something so extravagant. She thought back to their earlier conversations, trying to piece together what he wasn’t telling her. He had evaded all of her probing questions with humor and vagueness. But what if he was hiding more than just his wealth?
Jiang Ning, on the other hand, seemed unfazed by the attention or questions. The attention from the auntie was fleeting for him. He had one goal: to get Lin Yuzhen to accept what he was offering, to show her that things were different now.
“Let’s just go inside,” Jiang Ning said, his voice cutting through the tension.
Lin Yuzhen nodded, her mind still racing, unsure of what to make of all the events that had unfolded in such a short time.
As they entered the house, Sumei’s eyes widened in shock, her expression caught between disbelief and wonder. The sleek car outside seemed to almost mock the earlier tension, its polished surface gleaming in the sun.
“Yuzhen, what is this?” Sumei’s voice wavered as she spoke, clearly struggling to comprehend what she was seeing.
Lin Yuzhen, unsure of how to explain, simply gestured towards Jiang Ning, as if his actions could speak for themselves. “Jiang Ning… he bought it. He said I shouldn’t ride the scooter anymore, not in this cold.”
Sumei’s lips pressed into a thin line, not knowing whether to be grateful or confused. Her thoughts were interrupted when the auntie, still lingering outside, looked on in awe.
“This… this car? It’s worth $500,000, right?” The auntie’s voice was strained, barely able to mask her envy.
“Yes,” Lin Yuzhen replied softly, not fully understanding herself why Jiang Ning had done it.
“How… how did he manage to afford it?” Sumei’s voice cracked, unable to contain her surprise.
“Let’s just say he’s not as simple as he seems,” Lin Yuzhen replied with a little smile, though she still felt like she was only beginning to scratch the surface of who Jiang Ning really was.
Jiang Ning, now leaning against the doorframe, casually adjusted his jacket. “I don’t need to explain myself. I just wanted to do something nice.”
Lin Yuzhen felt her heart race at his words. She wasn’t sure what to make of them, but somehow, in that moment, it didn’t matter. Jiang Ning had shifted her world so unexpectedly, and she didn’t know how to keep up with the pace.
