Chapter 5
Lin Xiao was sitting calmly, sipping tea as the fragrant aroma of agarwood incense filled the room. He had come to inquire about the important project with CEO Huang.
Lin Qiang, while making tea, spoke with a sense of pride. “This project with CEO Huang is crucial for the Lins,” he said.
“Of course,” Lin Xiao replied, his tone full of satisfaction. “The Lins will soon rise to new heights.”
“What’s the status of the project?” Lin Xiao asked eagerly.
“No problem,” Lin Qiang reassured him. “Lin Feng has gone to get the contract signed today.”
“Your grandson has never disappointed you,” Lin Qiang added with a smile.
Lin Xiao nodded, clearly pleased. “All the men in the Lin family are outstanding.”
Just then, the door slammed open, and Lin Feng stormed in, his expression dark and angry.
When he saw his grandfather, Lin Xiao, he immediately stopped in his tracks, his hesitation apparent.
“We were just talking about you,” Lin Qiang said, motioning toward his father.
“Grandpa wanted to ask about the project with CEO Huang. Has the contract been signed?” he asked.
Lin Feng’s nervousness was evident as he stuttered, struggling to find the right words.
“Uh, this project…” he began, but his hesitation only fueled Lin Qiang’s concern. Something was off.
“I went to his office today,” Lin Feng said finally, trying to cover up his failure. “But CEO Huang had other matters to attend to. He asked me to come back tomorrow to get the contract signed.”
Lin Feng’s heart pounded. If Grandpa found out he had lost the deal, he knew the consequences would be severe. Lin Qiang’s expression grew darker as he heard the words. He could sense something was wrong.
“CEO Huang is always so arrogant. If he’s asking you to wait for a day, then just wait,” Lin Xiao replied dismissively, not sensing anything amiss.
“Yes, Grandpa, I’ll wait like you said,” Lin Feng responded, forcing a smile, but inside, his panic was growing.
However, Lin Qiang’s sharp instincts told him that the situation wasn’t as simple as it seemed.
Once Lin Xiao had left, Lin Qiang called Lin Feng into the study. His face was clouded with anger, and his voice shook with fury.
“What is going on?” Lin Qiang shouted. “If you’re hiding something from me, I’ll beat you to death!”
“Dad!” Lin Feng shot back, indignant. “This has nothing to do with me!”
“It’s Lin Yuzhen!” Lin Feng continued, his frustration boiling over. “CEO Huang said he would only sign the contract with Lin Yuzhen, and everyone else was refused entry into his office! They even kicked me out!”
Lin Qiang’s face darkened, and his anger flared.
“That Lin Yuzhen must be sleeping with CEO Huang! How else could this happen?” Lin Feng spat angrily.
“CEO Huang also said that if Lin Yuzhen doesn’t sign the contract, the project is off, and he won’t care,” he added bitterly.
Lin Qiang’s expression twisted. He couldn’t let the project slip away. The Lins had invested too much to lose it now.
“Do you know how much the Lins have invested in this project?” Lin Qiang’s voice was cold and harsh. “If we lose this, even if I don’t kill you, your grandfather will!”
Lin Feng’s face turned ashen. His mind raced. What were they going to do now?
“What do we do now?” Lin Feng asked anxiously. His mind was spinning. How could he salvage the situation he had caused?
Lin Qiang seethed with rage. “Who told you to fire Lin Yuzhen? Now we’ve lost the project, and both of us are in trouble!”
Lin Feng remained silent, knowing that his father, as CEO, was the one who had fired Lin Yuzhen.
“Get Lin Yuzhen back and make her sign that contract!” Lin Qiang snapped. “Once it’s signed, we can throw her out again.”
Lin Feng hesitated. “Do you think she’ll be willing to come back?”
“Call her now!” Lin Qiang barked.
Lin Feng, still nervous, took out his phone and dialed Lin Yuzhen’s number. He waited, but no one picked up.
“She’s not answering,” Lin Feng said, a look of helplessness in his eyes.
Lin Qiang’s eyes narrowed, his expression cold. “Looks like she has some pride. We’ll have to go to her personally and beg her to come back.”
If this project weren’t so critical, Lin Qiang would have preferred never to deal with Lin Yuzhen or her family again. But business was business, and right now, they couldn’t afford to lose.
Without further hesitation, Lin Qiang drove Lin Feng to Lin Yuzhen’s house.
When they arrived at the old, rundown Huacheng Estate, Lin Qiang wrinkled his nose in disgust. The area looked nothing like the luxurious surroundings he was used to.
“This house?” Lin Feng asked, pointing to the door.
It felt out of place for someone from the Lin family to be standing in this dilapidated neighborhood.
Lin Qiang looked around carefully, as if he might stain his expensive clothes.
Lin Feng banged on the door with urgency.
“Coming! Why do you have to bang so hard?” came a voice from inside.
Sumei opened the door, her expression a mixture of shock and disbelief when she saw who was standing on her doorstep.
“What are you doing here?” she demanded, her tone harsh.
“We’re looking for Lin Yuzhen,” Lin Qiang replied smoothly, pushing his way inside. “Where is she?”
“She’s not here,” Sumei snapped, her voice filled with resentment.
But Lin Qiang wasn’t deterred. “Lin Yuzhen! Come out and greet me. Uncle Qiang is here!” he called loudly.
Lin Yuzhen, who had been inside, overheard and froze. She didn’t expect them to show up at her place, especially after all these years. After her father’s accident, Lin Qiang had never bothered to visit them. What could they possibly want now?
Jiang Ning, standing nearby, calmly took Lin Yuzhen’s hand and led her out.
Lin Qiang grinned when he saw her. “Yuzhen, still angry with me?” he asked, a hint of mockery in his voice.
Lin Yuzhen didn’t respond.
Lin Qiang pressed on, “About the company firing you—that was a misunderstanding. But the company needs you back to sign the contract with CEO Huang. If you want to leave afterward, you’re free to go.”
Hearing this, Lin Yuzhen’s body trembled with rage.
So, when they didn’t need her, they fired her. Now that they did, they came crawling back, treating her as a mere tool for their own gain.
Sumei, furious, turned to Lin Qiang. “What are you trying to do? What do you take my daughter for? What do you take this whole family for?”
Lin Feng sneered, his words dripping with disdain. “Your family doesn’t really matter. The only reason I’m here is because Lin Yuzhen has some value now. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother with a rundown house like this.”
Sumei, filled with anger, raised her hand to slap Lin Feng, but before she could, a cold voice interrupted.
“Hit me if you dare!” Lin Qiang shouted, stepping forward to defend his son. “You old hag, you dare to hit a member of the Lin family?”
Sumei’s face turned crimson with fury, but before she could respond, a loud slap rang through the air. Lin Feng was holding his cheek, eyes wide in disbelief.
“Who gave you the guts to insult my mother-in-law like that?” Jiang Ning asked calmly, stepping forward.
“If you want to ask for a favor, you better do it humbly and nicely,” he added. “Didn’t your dad teach you that?”
