Chapter 4
Jiang Ning’s face tightened as he read Lin Feng’s text. His patience was quickly wearing thin.
Was Lin Feng really asking to die? He had dared to retaliate against Lin Yuzhen so soon, thinking he could escape the consequences of his actions. Jiang Ning’s eyes burned with anger.
“I hit him. It has nothing to do with you,” Jiang Ning said, his voice low but firm. “I’ll handle this.”
Lin Yuzhen shook her head, her face pale with concern. “No… don’t. If you go after him, he’ll make sure you don’t walk away unscathed.”
Lin Feng was vicious—Jiang Ning knew that better than anyone. The man wouldn’t hesitate to make things worse for him, especially after being humiliated in front of so many people.
Lin Yuzhen wiped her eyes, her voice breaking as she continued, “If you do anything, my parents will find out, and they’ll kick you out. You can’t make things worse by going after him.”
Jiang Ning glanced at her, his heart aching for this woman who had been through so much. It wasn’t right that she had to shoulder all of this alone. But he understood. If Lin Feng caught wind of anything, he’d escalate his cruelty without hesitation.
“It’s just a job,” Lin Yuzhen said with a faint smile, though her eyes remained sad. “If I can’t work at Lin Group anymore, I’ll find something else.”
Jiang Ning couldn’t help but admire her resilience. In the face of adversity, she refused to give up. But he knew that her situation was more complicated than that. She was being forced to fight battles on all fronts, from her family’s rejection to her lost career prospects.
Meanwhile, Lin Feng, still seething with rage from his earlier confrontation, stormed into the Huang Group’s office. His wrist, wrapped in a makeshift bandage, throbbed with pain, but his arrogance kept him moving forward.
“I’m here to see CEO Huang. I have the contract with me,” he announced, his voice filled with superiority.
The receptionist, however, remained calm. “Do you have an appointment with CEO Huang?”
Lin Feng’s patience was wearing thin. “I’m Lin Feng, General Manager of Lin Group. The contract for this project has already been discussed with CEO Huang. We’re finalizing it today.”
“I’m sorry,” the receptionist replied politely but firmly, “CEO Huang only sees people with appointments. And Miss Lin Yuzhen has direct access to him.”
Lin Feng’s face twisted in disbelief. “What?” he spat, his voice rising. “Lin Yuzhen gets to go up without any questions? And I, her senior, have to wait like this?”
“I’m afraid so, sir,” the receptionist said coolly.
Fury surged in Lin Feng. His pride had been hurt, and now, a mere receptionist was standing in his way. But he was desperate to salvage the deal, so he ignored her and attempted to go upstairs himself.
Before he could make another move, a voice thundered from behind him.
“It’s just a small project,” CEO Huang said, his tone dismissive. “If it gets delayed, I can afford to lose it.”
Lin Feng froze as he turned to face the CEO. His heart pounded with frustration. “CEO Huang, this project is of huge importance to Lin Group,” he said quickly, trying to cover his tracks. “I’ve brought the contract for your signature.”
“Who are you again?” CEO Huang asked, his voice sharp, sending a chill down Lin Feng’s spine.
Lin Feng’s eyes widened. Was he being dismissed like this? He stammered, “I-I’m Lin Feng. The General Manager of Lin Group.”
CEO Huang frowned. “Lin Yuzhen has already handled everything with me. If anyone is signing the contract, it will be her.”
Lin Feng could hardly believe his ears. “What? You’re signing with her? But I’m… I’m the senior in the family!”
“I don’t care who you are. This project will only be signed by Lin Yuzhen.” CEO Huang’s voice turned cold, and the security guards began to move in.
“Get him out!” CEO Huang ordered.
Lin Feng barely had time to react before the security guards seized him, throwing him out of the building.
“AHH!” Lin Feng yelped, the pain from his injured wrist making him howl in agony.
The humiliation was overwhelming. Never in his life had he been treated like this—especially not by someone who should have been in his debt. But Lin Yuzhen? Her connections were stronger than he had ever imagined, and now he was the one left in the dust.
“Lin Yuzhen!” he screamed, his face flushed red with anger. “You think you can get away with this? You’ve been hiding something, haven’t you? Something shady is going on with you and CEO Huang!”
As Lin Feng walked away, clutching the contract in his hand, he vowed that he would expose whatever it was between Lin Yuzhen and Huang Yuming. He couldn’t afford to lose this project, but even more so, he couldn’t afford to let Lin Yuzhen’s success outshine his own.
Back in his office, CEO Huang was on the phone, speaking with someone whose name struck fear into his heart.
“Brother Fei, I’ve done as you instructed,” Huang Yuming said, his voice trembling. “But I still don’t understand… who is the important person that asked for this favor?”
On the other end of the line, Fei’s voice was low, almost playful. “He’s my boss. He didn’t ask me for a favor. I’m simply carrying out his instructions.”
Huang Yuming’s mind raced. “His boss…?”
His heart skipped a beat. Was this person more powerful than Fei? If so, how much power did they wield?
“Think harder,” Fei continued. “Do you really think everything you’ve achieved in Donghai was because of me?”
Huang Yuming froze, his thoughts spinning. “But… you helped me get here,” he said carefully. “Without you, I’d still be in the streets.”
“Is that the answer you think I wanted?” Fei’s voice was cold. “It’s his support that made you who you are now. And with just one word from him, everything you have could be taken away. You understand, right?”
A cold shiver ran down Huang Yuming’s spine. “I understand, Brother Fei. Thank you for your guidance. I’ll make sure to do well.”
As he ended the call, Huang Yuming felt his legs weaken. The truth had hit him harder than anything else. The real power behind him wasn’t Fei, but someone far more dangerous—someone who had the ability to destroy everything he had worked for.
In that moment, Huang Yuming realized that Lin Yuzhen wasn’t just some ordinary woman. She was connected to someone far more powerful, and Lin Qiang and his son were about to find out just how big of a mistake they had made.
