Chapter 7
Lin Feng was furious. He couldn’t believe what had just happened. His hand had been broken by Jiang Ning—this insane man! He dared not retaliate. Provoking someone like him was a disaster waiting to happen.
Lin Qiang’s frown deepened. He hadn’t expected that the husband he’d chosen for Lin Yuzhen would turn out to be completely unhinged. Jiang Ning had the audacity to slap Lin Feng right in front of him.
“I haven’t forgotten the last incident,” Lin Qiang said, narrowing his eyes, trying to maintain control of the situation. But when he locked eyes with Jiang Ning, it felt like he was falling into a deep abyss. His legs trembled slightly under the intense gaze.
What was this terrifying aura? Jiang Ning wasn’t just a madman—he was a predator. Lin Qiang felt it, and it made his skin crawl.
“Settling with me?” Jiang Ning’s voice was calm, his eyes steady as ever. “It seems like you aren’t here to discuss anything about the company. You’re here to make a scene.”
Lin Qiang quickly suppressed his anger. He wasn’t going to let some lunatic disrupt his plans. Once the contract was signed, he’d deal with these people.
With a scoff, Lin Qiang turned his attention to Lin Yuzhen. “Lin Group needs you. Come back.”
His tone was cold, completely devoid of sincerity.
Lin Yuzhen didn’t know how to respond, but before she could speak, Jiang Ning intervened.
“I’ll remind you one last time,” Jiang Ning continued, unbothered. “When you ask for a favor, you need to be humble. If your attitude is still like this tomorrow, my conditions won’t remain the same.”
Lin Qiang’s expression shifted. His eyelids twitched as he glared at Jiang Ning, his anger building up.
“You think we can’t get this project signed without Lin Yuzhen?” Lin Qiang sneered, trying to hold on to his pride. “Go ahead, try.”
Jiang Ning was unfazed, his composure unshaken. “You really want to go down that road? It won’t end well for you.”
Sumei and Lin Yuzhen watched Jiang Ning in stunned silence. Was this really the man who had married into their family? The same homeless son-in-law they had ridiculed?
Lin Yuzhen looked at her father and mother with mixed feelings. It was hard to process everything that was happening.
As Lin Qiang stormed out with Lin Feng, he called out to the house, “Lin Wen, you’ve done a great job as the head of this household!”
Lin Wen, still confined to his wheelchair, rolled into the room with a pale face, visibly shaken. He hadn’t dared to face Lin Qiang earlier.
“What… what are we going to do?” Lin Wen asked, his voice trembling slightly.
Sumei’s anger flared. Where had he been when his daughter was being mistreated? Now he was asking them what to do?
Lin Yuzhen shook her head, her determination firm. “It’s just a job. I don’t care about it.”
Sumei looked at her daughter, her heart aching. She had to take care of Lin Wen, and there was little she could do to help Yuzhen.
“I’ll take care of both of you,” Jiang Ning spoke up, his voice reassuring.
Sumei and Lin Wen exchanged a glance, confused but relieved. Jiang Ning, despite all his faults, seemed to be the only one who truly cared. Even if they didn’t fully understand him, they couldn’t deny that.
“I’ll go cook,” Sumei muttered as she turned to head into the kitchen, leaving the others to their thoughts.
Lin Wen retreated to his room, and Lin Yuzhen, still processing everything, dragged Jiang Ning into her room.
“What… what did you just say?” Lin Yuzhen asked, her voice trembling in confusion.
“I said I’ll take care of your parents with you,” Jiang Ning repeated calmly.
“What?” Lin Yuzhen stared at him in shock. She was still processing the fact that Jiang Ning was her husband, and now he was talking about taking care of her family?
“Uncle…?” Lin Yuzhen hesitated, unsure of what to make of him.
“You get ready to sign that contract. It’s going to be you who does it,” Jiang Ning added, his tone matter-of-fact.
Lin Yuzhen was speechless. She had been working with CEO Huang on this project, and while the details were already settled, she never expected it would come down to this. Surely, it didn’t have to be her who signed it, right?
“Yes, it has to be you,” Jiang Ning said simply, confident in his assessment.
Meanwhile, at Lin Qiang’s house, the tension was palpable. Lin Feng slammed his hand on the table, smashing the cups in frustration. “What the hell is going on!?”
Lin Feng had been slapped twice by Jiang Ning, and now the whole town would hear about it. His pride was on the line, and the thought of admitting defeat was unbearable.
Lin Qiang, too, was furious. He never imagined the situation would become so difficult. Why was CEO Huang so protective of Lin Yuzhen? Was it because of her skills, or was there something more to the story?
“Lin Yuzhen, that little slut! Looks like she knows how to keep men happy, huh?” Lin Qiang scoffed. “All that innocence? Just an act!”
But his words were interrupted by Lin Feng’s phone ringing. He froze when he saw the name on the screen.
“It’s Grandpa,” Lin Feng said, his voice shaking.
He was terrified. Lin Xiao, his grandfather, was the last person he wanted to talk to right now.
Lin Qiang barked at him to pick it up.
Lin Feng hesitated, but he knew he had no choice. The consequences of ignoring Grandpa’s call were far worse than whatever humiliation he was about to face.
“Grandpa,” Lin Feng greeted, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Feng, how’s the project with CEO Huang?” Lin Xiao’s voice was sharp, cutting straight to the point.
“Good, everything’s going smoothly,” Lin Feng lied, glancing nervously at his father.
“I’m sure once CEO Huang is free, we’ll get the contract signed,” he added, trying to sound confident.
Lin Xiao’s response was curt. “Watch it closely. If anything goes wrong, you’ll answer to me.”
The line went dead, and Lin Feng wiped the sweat off his palm. His grandfather’s wrath was not something he could escape easily.
“Dad, what do we do now?” Lin Feng asked, his voice filled with panic.
Lin Qiang’s face darkened. He couldn’t believe he was about to beg Lin Yuzhen and her family. After all their arrogance, having to return on their knees felt like the ultimate humiliation.
“Lin Feng, you go,” Lin Qiang finally ordered. “Go beg Lin Yuzhen. If you have to kneel, then kneel. Get her to sign that damn contract.”
Lin Feng froze, horrified. He’d never imagined things would come to this point.
But Lin Qiang was desperate. His pride was nothing compared to the loss of this project.
Meanwhile, at Lin Yuzhen’s house, the family sat down to dinner. For the first time, Jiang Ning was eating with them, and despite the awkwardness, he behaved like he belonged.
“Mum, this is really delicious!” Jiang Ning said, shoveling rice into his bowl without hesitation. “Can I have more?”
Lin Yuzhen couldn’t help but watch him. He seemed like he hadn’t eaten well in a long time, and it made her heart ache.
Before Sumei could react, Lin Yuzhen filled his bowl with more rice.
“Thanks, wifey,” Jiang Ning said with a smile, causing Lin Yuzhen to flinch at the unexpected term of endearment. Her hand trembled slightly as she set the bowl down.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
Lin Wen stood up, but Sumei shot him a glare that made him sit back down.
“Who is it?” she called out.
“It’s me, Lin Feng,” came the voice from the other side.
Sumei and Lin Yuzhen exchanged wary glances. Why was he back? Had he come to beg like Jiang Ning said?
Sumei opened the door, and Lin Feng put on a fake smile. “Auntie Sumei, are you having dinner? Is Yuzhen around?”
His voice dripped with insincerity. He quickly spotted Lin Yuzhen at the table and turned his attention to her.
“Yuzhen, I’m sorry for what happened earlier. I hope you won’t hold it against me.”
Lin Yuzhen was taken aback. Was Lin Feng actually apologizing?
“Lin Group needs you,” Lin Feng continued, his words laced with false charm. “The office is in chaos without you. Come back.”
Jiang Ning didn’t let it slide. “Where’s your dad? Shouldn’t he be here?”
Lin Feng was caught off guard, but his smile remained. “He’s too busy, so he sent me to apologize. I hope my brother-in-law can forgive me.”
But Jiang Ning wasn’t having it.
“No, it’s your father who fired her, so it’s him who needs to apologize. Otherwise, we’re not accepting it.”
Lin Feng’s face darkened. He couldn’t believe this lunatic was making him do all this.
“You…” Lin Feng began, but Jiang Ning cut him off.
“Tell your father to come here and apologize. Otherwise, you’ll bear the consequences,” he said coldly.
Lin Feng stood there, his pride shattered, unable to say another word.
Jiang Ning turned to his family. “We’re done eating. If you’re still standing here, you’re just wasting your time.”
The room was tense, and Lin Feng was left to face the full weight of his family’s humiliation.
