Chapter 44
Lin Yuzhen sat back in her chair, her mind racing as she tried to absorb everything that had been happening around her. Jiang Ning’s words echoed in her mind—work hard and repay him—and a sense of unease settled in her stomach. The amount of money he had been spending was beyond anything she could fathom, and while she was grateful for his generosity, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being swept along in a current she wasn’t fully in control of.
She sighed, feeling the weight of both the financial burden and the uncertainty of her future. Her relationship with Jiang Ning had changed, and she knew it was only a matter of time before things would be forced to evolve even further. She couldn’t help but wonder if, in the end, she would be able to pay back everything he had done for them—or if she would end up owing him more than she could ever repay.
Meanwhile, Jiang Ning was lost in his thoughts as well. His eyes wandered across the room, following the faint traces of concern on Lin Yuzhen’s face. He had always been driven, always looking for ways to help, but he knew deep down that Lin Yuzhen would never be comfortable with him spending so much on her family without ever expecting anything in return. That was something she just couldn’t accept, no matter how much he tried to reassure her.
He glanced back at her and smiled, attempting to lighten the mood. “You know, you really don’t need to keep track of all of this. I’m not doing it for the repayment. I’m doing it because it’s the right thing to do. And I’ve got no problem helping you all. So please, just relax a bit.”
But Lin Yuzhen remained quiet, her thoughts seemingly elsewhere, as if something had clicked in her mind. She had always believed that she could handle everything on her own, but now, with all that Jiang Ning was doing for them, she was beginning to realize just how much she relied on him. It was both humbling and overwhelming at the same time.
The sudden sound of the doorbell interrupted their quiet exchange. Jiang Ning turned toward it, sensing a shift in the atmosphere as if something big was about to happen.
Lin Yuzhen felt her heart skip a beat as she stood up, the uneasy feeling from earlier coming back with full force. “Who could that be?”
Jiang Ning’s eyes hardened for a moment before he smiled again, masking his unease. “Let’s see.”
They made their way to the door, but as soon as it opened, the expression on Jiang Ning’s face changed. Standing there were a few men dressed in business suits, clearly not the typical visitors they were used to. One of them stepped forward and spoke in a calm, measured voice, but the tension in the air was palpable.
“Jiang Ning,” the man said, “We need to talk.”
Jiang Ning’s face darkened instantly, and Lin Yuzhen could sense that the situation was more serious than it appeared. “About what?”
“It’s about Hei Long,” the man replied, his voice still calm, but the underlying threat was evident.
At the mention of Hei Long, Lin Yuzhen felt her blood run cold. She had heard the name before, and it was not a name you wanted to hear when things were already tense.
Jiang Ning’s gaze turned cold, and without a word, he stepped aside to let the men in. He wasn’t going to make a scene—at least not yet.
As the men entered, Lin Yuzhen’s mind raced. What could Hei Long possibly want with Jiang Ning? And why now?
The tension in the room only grew as the men took a seat and began to speak about the events that had unfolded. Lin Yuzhen stood by silently, sensing that things were about to escalate beyond what they could have imagined.
