Chapter 17
Jiang Ning’s voice echoed in the quiet bank, leaving a chilling air in his wake. He knew how to make an impression, and the terrified faces of the staff in the bank made it clear he had done just that.
Lin Yuzhen, still reeling from the situation with her mother, walked out with her head held high. She could feel the eyes of every single person in the bank on her and her mother. But she wasn’t afraid anymore, not with Jiang Ning at her side. As they walked out, the entire security team stepped aside, too afraid to even breathe in their direction.
“Are you okay, Mum?” Lin Yuzhen asked softly, her hand resting on Sumei’s shoulder as they reached the car.
Sumei, still trembling slightly, nodded but said nothing. The shock of the earlier events had left her too stunned to form words.
“Don’t worry, no one will dare hurt you again,” Jiang Ning’s voice was low but steady as he drove them home.
Lin Yuzhen turned to him, her eyes filled with gratitude. “I don’t know what to say. If you weren’t here, I don’t know what would’ve happened.”
Jiang Ning simply shrugged, his face impassive. “You don’t have to say anything. It’s not about words.”
As they drove through the streets, Lin Yuzhen felt a sense of calm that she hadn’t experienced before. Her mother was safe, the people who dared to harm her were thoroughly put in their place, and most importantly, she wasn’t alone. Jiang Ning’s presence—his strength, his unspoken loyalty—was something she hadn’t known she needed until now.
They arrived back at Huacheng Estate, and Lin Yuzhen helped her mother into the house, still holding her gently as if protecting her from any lingering shadows of the confrontation. Inside, Sumei took a seat on the sofa, and Lin Yuzhen quickly got her some water.
Jiang Ning lingered at the doorway, watching the scene quietly. He didn’t need to be a part of their intimate moment, but he couldn’t tear himself away either. There was something comforting about knowing that, in this moment, everything was right where it needed to be.
After a few moments, Sumei finally spoke, her voice quiet but filled with emotion. “I don’t understand… why did they treat me like that? I’ve never stolen in my life.”
Lin Yuzhen sighed, kneeling beside her mother. “I know, Mum. But we will make sure it never happens again. I won’t let them get away with it.”
Sumei reached for her daughter’s hand, squeezing it. “I’m sorry, Yuzhen… I didn’t want you to be involved in all this.”
“Don’t apologize,” Lin Yuzhen said firmly. “We’re a family. We look out for each other. Always.”
Jiang Ning’s voice interrupted softly, “And no one will harm you again. Trust me.”
The warmth of his words, though simple, seemed to settle the tension in the room. Sumei looked at him and, for the first time in a long while, allowed herself to smile.
Lin Yuzhen glanced at Jiang Ning, feeling a deep gratitude for the man who had just saved her mother—and perhaps, in a sense, saved her family from something much worse.
