Chapter 10
Loraine felt warmth flood her broken heart as she sat surrounded by her family’s love.
“Grandpa, Uncle Rowan, I won’t do anything so silly ever again,” she promised, her voice steady despite the lingering ache inside her.
Rowan nodded, his expression softening in relief. “I’m satisfied that you know what you’re doing. I’ll return to the army to continue my mission.” He rose to leave, giving Loraine one last reassuring glance.
Just as the door closed behind Rowan, a familiar voice called out to her from across the room.
“Lorrie! I’ve missed you so much!”
Loraine’s eyes widened in surprise. “Jennie! What are you doing here?”
Jennie Fowler, her best friend, rushed into the room with a bright smile and a wide open hug. “I came as soon as I heard that you were back!” she exclaimed, wrapping her arms tightly around Loraine.
The sight of her friend brought an unexpected surge of emotion. It had been so long since Loraine had felt truly connected to someone who cared about her. Jennie’s presence was like a warm reminder of the life she had once taken for granted.
Aldo and Rowan left the bedroom, respecting their privacy. Loraine’s heart squeezed painfully as she looked at Jennie, her eyes filled with unshed tears.
To marry Marco, she had surrendered everything. She had cut herself off from her family, from her roots, only to end up completely alone in the end. All the sacrifices, the compromises… it hadn’t been worth it.
“Jennie, I missed you so much,” Loraine whispered, her voice breaking.
Jennie immediately wiped the tears from Loraine’s face with a soft touch, her anger flaring as she realized how much Loraine had endured. “Did that bastard break your heart?” she asked, her voice sharp with righteous fury. “Just you wait. I’ll teach him a lesson!”
Loraine took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “Wait a minute. I’ve made up my mind. I want a divorce.”
Jennie’s eyes brightened immediately, and a wide grin spread across her face. “Great! You should have divorced that bastard ages ago! You’re a Torres; you can have any man you want. In fact, hold that thought. I’ll call a bunch of men for you right now!”
She practically leapt to grab her phone, eager to find Loraine a new suitor. But Loraine stopped her with a gentle hand on her arm.
“No, thanks. My career is more important right now,” Loraine said, shaking her head with a wry smile.
As much as part of her longed for affection, for someone to take away the sting of her heartache, Loraine knew she needed to focus on herself first. Her career, her future—that was the only thing that mattered right now.
Jennie’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Will you take over Universe Group? Cayson is the CEO now. Ask him to arrange a position of vice president for you!”
Loraine smiled softly at Jennie’s suggestion, but shook her head. “Not yet, Jennie. I’ve got some thinking to do before I take any big steps. But thank you… for always being there.”
Jennie squeezed Loraine’s hand affectionately, her eyes full of unspoken support. She would always be there, no matter what.
