Chapter 22
Marina’s voice trembled with barely-contained tears as she spoke.
“You have to help me, Keely. Remember, I did everything you suggested.”
Keely, lying in bed, looked at her with a concerned expression, though her clenched fists under the quilt betrayed her true feelings. A flash of resentment flickered in her eyes.
How could Loraine have turned things around so easily?
Despite her fury, Keely knew it was best to calm Marina down first before making any decisions. She forced a smile.
“Don’t worry, Marina. Leave this to me. I’ll find a way. But you can’t tell Marco that I had any part in this. If he finds out, I won’t be able to help you convince him.”
Marina hesitated, looking unsure. “What if he gets angrier when he finds out I’m still hiding something from him?”
Keely, with a touch of guilt, responded, “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have pushed you to do that without having a concrete plan in place. When I found out that Loraine was seeing someone else, I felt sorry for Marco…”
Suddenly, Marina’s face contorted with anger. She shot up from her seat, fists clenched tightly.
“No, this is all Loraine’s fault! If that bitch hadn’t been around, my brother wouldn’t have turned against me! Loraine stayed married to Marco for three years and leached off him, and now she’s doing the same to another man. How shameless! She’s the reason why you’re being labeled a mistress!”
A mistress?
Keely’s face drained of color, her shock palpable.
Once Marina left, Keely immediately turned on her phone, opening Twitter. The insults pouring in were overwhelming.
Her hands shook in fury as she called her family’s PR department.
“I don’t care what you need to do. Just shut down the rumors. Remove my name from the top trending topic right now!”
“Miss Haywood, I’m afraid we can’t do that. The scandal’s too big to erase from the internet. The person behind it is extremely powerful. And… he said…”
“What did he say?”
Keely’s gut twisted with suspicion.
“He said the scandal will stay trending on Twitter for a week.”
