Chapter 70
Loraine didn’t hesitate for a second. “Uncle Rowan, please don’t!”
But Rowan was persistent. “Lorrie, I’m your uncle. What’s wrong with me helping you? Bryant Group is deeply involved with the government, and Marco has turned the company into a powerhouse at such a young age. I’m sure he must have used some underhanded methods to get there.”
Loraine rubbed her temples in frustration. “Uncle Rowan, I appreciate your concern, but I don’t need any help. I can win this project on my own!”
Rowan paused, clearly torn. After a moment, he sighed. “Fine, you’re right. I believe in you. You can win it with your own skill. But I’ll make sure to contact some of my friends and ensure that the government makes this tender open for public assessment. Since you don’t want to use any connections, I’ll make sure no one else can use their influence behind the scenes.”
Meanwhile, two uninvited visitors walked into Marco’s office.
“Marco, what’s been keeping you so busy lately?” Slater slouched onto the sofa with a playful grin. “If we hadn’t come to visit, I don’t think we’d have seen you at all.”
Marco, buried in his work, didn’t even glance up.
Jimmie, sitting beside Slater, sighed dramatically. “Honestly, you’re a workaholic. I thought after your divorce, we’d hang out more. But it seems like it’s gotten worse since you split from her.”
Slater, however, was quick to cut in. “I actually think it’s great that you’re divorced. That woman was never good enough for you. You did the right thing.”
Marco’s hand paused on the document, and his gaze shot up to meet Slater’s. His jaw clenched as he responded, “Slater, Loraine is not as bad as you think. She’s now the director of the architectural design department at Universe Group.”
Slater raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “I heard she’s dating Cayson, the CEO of Universe Group. I’m sure that’s how she got promoted.”
“As far as I know, Loraine has already secured two major projects for the company,” Marco continued, his voice tight with frustration. “Now she’s leading her team in the bidding for the smart city project.”
Slater and Jimmie exchanged a surprised glance.
“How do you know all this?” Jimmie asked, his curiosity piqued.
