Chapter 66
Marco followed Loraine out of the manor, his heart pounding in his chest. He quickly caught up with her, but just as he was about to grab her hand, Cayson stepped in front of him, blocking his path.
“Get away from her!” Marco growled, his teeth clenched. “I need to talk to Loraine.”
“Lorrie doesn’t want to talk to you right now,” Cayson replied firmly, not budging an inch.
Marco’s eyes shifted to Loraine, but she continued walking, her back to him, as if she hadn’t a care in the world about his presence. She didn’t even glance back.
A heavy weight settled in Marco’s chest, but part of him reminded him that he had no right to be angry. It was his fault. He had suspected Loraine once again, without knowing the truth, and now he was paying the price.
He wanted to apologize, to explain, but the words stuck in his throat whenever he saw Cayson standing beside her. He knew it was pointless.
“I’ll make it up to you, Loraine,” Marco called out, his voice hoarse.
Loraine, however, seemed to walk even faster, her steps quickening as if eager to get as far away from him as possible.
With each step she took, Marco felt the weight of his mistakes pile up. He realized, painfully, that Loraine had never wanted his money. She didn’t need him or his wealth. She was doing just fine on her own.
As if reading his mind, Loraine walked ahead, her back still turned to him.
“Loraine!” Marco called out one more time, his voice desperate. “Join Bryant Group. It’s the best opportunity for you, for your career.”
Loraine stopped dead in her tracks at the mention of Bryant Group, her back stiffening.
Marco’s heart surged with hope, his eyes lighting up. “Don’t stay in Universe Group. You’re wasting your talent there. I can offer you the most important project of Bryant Group. It’s worth at least a thousand times the combined value of the resort and amusement park projects you’ve been working on. This project will put you on the national architectural map.”
Cayson’s usual calm demeanor was gone. His face darkened with barely contained fury as he stepped closer to Loraine.
But Loraine slowly turned around, her eyes meeting Marco’s with an unreadable expression.
She had always liked challenges.
Marco, desperate and willing to offer her anything, hoped the tempting opportunity would make her reconsider. But Loraine wasn’t interested in his apologies or his offers. She wouldn’t give him what he wanted—not this time.
