Chapter 44
Everything happened so fast. The employees were still in a daze, trying to process what had just unfolded. Even Loraine, the mastermind behind it all, was a little taken aback by how quickly things had escalated.
She didn’t expect the police to respond so rapidly.
The arrest had put an abrupt end to the meeting. The atmosphere in the room was thick with tension, and no one seemed to know what to say next.
One of the officers turned to Loraine and asked her to cooperate with them during the investigation.
“I appreciate your dedication to your job,” Loraine said, her voice tinged with curiosity, “but I’m rather surprised that you came so quickly. I had only called the police a while ago.”
She felt a nagging suspicion rise in her chest. The recording was solid evidence, but it didn’t prove that Barry had assaulted her that night. It seemed strange to her that the police had been dispatched so swiftly.
The officer must have sensed her doubt. He explained, “Miss Torres, it might interest you to know that Barry is not a first-time offender. He has harassed other women and also used his power to embezzle money. In the past, many victims have filed reports against him and provided substantial evidence.”
Loraine’s jaw dropped in shock. She hadn’t known the full extent of Barry’s actions, but this revelation left her speechless. Still, something about the situation didn’t sit right with her. There was more to this story.
She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a bigger hand at play here, that someone had orchestrated Barry’s downfall so quickly. Her instincts told her this wasn’t just coincidence—it was too perfectly timed.
Loraine’s thoughts immediately turned to one person. This person had been showing an unusual amount of attention toward her recently, and a warm feeling bloomed in her chest at the thought of him.
After the policemen left, she pulled out her phone and dialed Cayson’s number.
“What’s up, Lorrie?” Cayson’s cheerful and gentle voice echoed in her ear, and Loraine couldn’t help but smile at the sound.
“Thank you for helping me deal with Barry,” she said, her voice soft with gratitude. “You didn’t have to do that. I could have handled it myself.”
“Lorrie, don’t worry about it,” Cayson replied easily. “I’ve already fired Barry. Now that I know what happened, I’m making sure we gather more evidence of his shady dealings to ensure his sentence gets the punishment it deserves.”
Loraine felt a warmth spread through her at the mention of his support. It was comforting to know that, even without her asking, Cayson had already taken matters into his own hands. She was starting to realize that he was someone she could rely on.
