Chapter 80
Slater couldn’t believe that someone like Loraine—coming from a small-town background—had managed to defeat Marco. He thought back to what Keely had said last time and started to grow suspicious about Loraine’s victory. “That woman must have used some dirty tactics. First, it was Cayson; now, it’s some influential government official helping her out.”
Marco growled, his patience wearing thin. “Enough! The tender was open to public assessment. There’s no way she could have cheated her way through this.”
Jimmie, not missing a chance to provoke him, teased, “So, you’re admitting Loraine beat you fair and square? Are you saying you’re inferior to her?”
Marco’s face darkened, a storm brewing in his eyes.
“I’ll admit, Loraine won this time because of her potential. But don’t think for a second that I’ll go down without a fight,” Marco snapped.
Jimmie raised an eyebrow, surprised by Marco’s admission. “Marco, I’ve known you for years, and this is the first time I’ve seen you appreciate a woman like this. Too bad she’s your ex-wife now.”
Marco rolled his eyes, clearly uncomfortable with the conversation.
Jimmie pursed his lips, gesturing as if to zip them shut. “Fine, fine, I’ll keep quiet.”
Slater, however, wasn’t interested in continuing the discussion. “Enough about Loraine. Look at her. Only a woman like that—beautiful, sensual—deserves attention.”
His eyes locked onto a woman on the dance floor, who was moving with effortless grace to the rhythm of the music. Her back was to him, but that didn’t stop Slater from being captivated. He let out a low whistle, drawing attention to her.
Jimmie, still intrigued by the change in topic, turned his head to look at the woman. But Marco, to their surprise, didn’t even seem to notice her.
Slater, sensing a shift in the mood, grinned. “Well, if you’re not interested, I’ll go have my fun.” He stood up quickly, smoothing his shirt as he made his way to the dance floor, a cocky smile playing on his lips.
