Chapter 87
Marco’s eyes narrowed with determination. He slammed his foot down on the gas pedal, and the black Ford roared to life, surging forward with incredible speed. He shot past Slater, now the race was between him and Loraine.
Slater, realizing he was left behind, called out to Marco, his voice barely audible over the engines. “Marco, I’ll leave the rest to you! Fight for your bro! Don’t go easy on her!”
Meanwhile, Jimmie and Jennie were anxiously waiting by the finishing line. Their hearts pounded as the two cars came into view, racing neck-and-neck. The distance between them was almost impossible to gauge, as both Loraine and Marco pushed their cars to the limit.
The roar of the engines grew louder as the cars neared the finish line, and in a dramatic moment, they crossed it almost simultaneously. Both cars screeched to a halt, their engines still buzzing with the intensity of the race.
As Loraine climbed out of her Audi, Jennie rushed to her, practically bouncing with excitement. “Lorrie, that’s amazing! You won! You’re the winner!”
Before Loraine could even respond, Slater finally reached the finish line. He seemed deflated, his usual bravado evaporating into the night air. He approached, his body language stiff and defeated, like a cat that had lost a fight.
Jennie couldn’t resist and immediately reached out her hand toward Slater. “You lost to Lorrie. Give me the car keys!”
Slater’s body stiffened at her demand, his fingers instinctively clutching the keys in his hand. His gaze darted nervously toward Marco, standing a few feet away, and an idea formed in his mind.
“What?” Jennie’s sneer deepened. “Are you going to go back on your word?”
Slater’s voice faltered. “No… But the rules didn’t say only I could compete with Loraine. Marco also participated, and he won. Marco is my friend. So, if he didn’t lose, it means I didn’t lose either.”
Jennie’s eyes widened in disbelief. She had never met anyone so shameless or unreasonable.
Before Jennie could respond, Marco calmly raised his hands in surrender, looking almost amused. “I lost,” he admitted. “Despite the difference in our car’s performance, the race ended in a tie. So naturally, I lost.”
