Chapter 51
Their words didn’t faze Loraine one bit. She stayed calm, a serene smile playing on her lips as she turned to Jolie. “Just ignore them. Let’s concentrate on our work,” she said, her voice soft but firm.
Loraine was too busy with the amusement park project to engage with her colleagues’ petty comments.
But Jolie wasn’t so composed. She could feel her anger bubbling inside as she listened to the slander. “Gosh! You’re just too forgiving,” she muttered, shaking her head as she opened the new email that had just arrived.
The next second, her eyes widened in shock. “Oh my God! Loraine! It’s you! Look! It’s you!” she exclaimed, her voice filled with disbelief. She grabbed Loraine’s shoulder and shook her excitedly.
Loraine was caught off guard, her head spinning from the sudden movement. When she finally managed to pull away from Jolie’s grasp, she looked at the screen.
Her name was right there—bold and clear—on the promotion notice.
Loraine blinked a few times, unsure if her eyes were deceiving her. The email announced that she had been appointed as the new director of the architectural design department.
“What? How did this happen?” Loraine muttered, her mind racing. She had specifically told Cayson that she didn’t want the promotion. So why had he gone against her wishes?
Before she could process what was going on, the other employees crowded around, curious to see what had caused such excitement.
A ripple of shock ran through the group as they saw the notice.
“That’s impossible! You must be mistaken!” one of them said, shaking their head.
Eliza, who had been hanging around, pushed her way forward, determined to confirm the situation. She leaned over and squinted at the screen. Her face drained of color as she realized it was true.
Her name wasn’t on the list. Loraine’s was.
Eliza’s face turned crimson with embarrassment and fury. She glanced back at her colleagues, who were now whispering amongst themselves. Her voice was sharp and incredulous when she demanded, “How can this be? Why not me?”
She was at a loss for words for a moment, the bitter taste of defeat lingering on her tongue. As she racked her brain, an idea suddenly clicked. Her eyes turned cold, and she spun around to face Loraine, pointing an accusing finger at her.
“You cheat!” she spat, her voice laced with venom. “You must have clinched the position through dirty means! How else could you become a director when I’m so much more qualified and experienced than you?”
The employees who had been loyal to Eliza immediately shifted their glances, their expressions wavering between doubt and suspicion. Some of them, though unsure, were starting to murmur amongst themselves.
Loraine stayed calm, though she couldn’t ignore the tight knot forming in her stomach. She hadn’t expected this kind of reaction, and it seemed the tension was only beginning to build.
