Chapter 45
The fury in Cayson’s voice was unmistakable. His anger at Barry burned through the phone line, and Loraine could almost picture him seething, wishing he could lock the man up and throw away the keys.
“One more thing, Lorrie,” Cayson’s voice shifted as he changed the subject.
Loraine raised an eyebrow, curious.
“Now that Barry is fired, the director position is vacant. How about you take it? This way, no one will dare make things difficult for you in this company.”
Loraine immediately turned down the offer. “No! Ascending to such a position now would be too soon. People won’t respect me for my talent if you promote me. They’ll think I slept my way to the top, just like they’re already insinuating. Besides, it would prevent me from truly seeing the employees’ real nature. I want to prove myself on my own while observing the people here. This way, I can weed out the bad eggs as I go. It’s like killing two birds with one stone.”
Cayson thought for a moment, then sighed. He understood where she was coming from, and as always, respected her decision.
“Okay, Lorrie. You can do as you wish. But if something bad happens, you have to tell me. Deal?”
“Deal!” Loraine responded, her voice firm with determination.
After ending the call, a wave of resolve washed over her. She was ready for whatever tough challenges lay ahead. The road would be hard, but she wasn’t about to back down.
Meanwhile, Cayson sat in his office, still feeling the confusion gnawing at him. He had just found out about Barry’s actions a few minutes ago—after the arrest had already been made. Why then did Loraine thank him? She had never once mentioned his involvement. And more importantly, who had helped her with the situation? Was there another player in this game, and what was their angle?
The questions kept swirling in his mind.
At Bryant Group, in the CEO’s office, Jimmie finished a call and turned to the man standing by the French windows. His lips curled into a satisfied smile.
“Everything is settled. Barry Gray was just arrested by the cops. I’m sure he’ll get a harsh sentence once he’s taken to court.”
The man turned around, revealing his cold, handsome face. It was Marco.
“Thanks for your help, pal,” Marco said, though his voice was distant.
Jimmie raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Dude, have you forgotten who helped you out? You’re just going to thank me?”
Marco smirked. “Don’t worry. I’ll reward you handsomely.”
Jimmie wasn’t concerned about the reward at that moment. He had bigger questions that needed answering.
“You know, I’ve been meaning to ask you something,” Jimmie said casually, but there was a sharpness in his tone. “What’s your deal with Loraine? I’ve been seeing the way you look at her. What’s going on between you two?”
Marco’s expression darkened for a moment, and he didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he took a deep breath and turned back toward the window, looking out into the distance as if searching for the right words.
