Chapter 31
Loraine had already turned around, preparing to leave, but Marco wasn’t about to let her go.
“Stop right there! Did I give you permission to leave?” Marco’s voice was cold and commanding. “Don’t you dare walk out on me!”
Loraine froze for a moment, her back still turned to him, before she slowly turned back around, her expression unreadable. Before she could speak, however, Cayson, who had been quiet until then, suddenly stepped forward, his patience running thin.
“Marco Bryant! That’s enough!” he roared, his voice vibrating with authority. He placed himself between Marco and Loraine, locking eyes with him. “You have no right to boss Loraine around. Maybe you should ask your sister what she did first.”
Marco’s brow furrowed, confusion clouding his features.
“What do you mean?” he asked, his voice laced with annoyance.
Cayson sneered, crossing his arms. “You should be thankful Loraine is merciful. Your sister deserved to be beaten to a pulp, but Loraine only slapped her.”
Marco’s face reddened, and fury surged within him as he stepped forward. “Watch your mouth, Cayson Benton!”
Cayson didn’t flinch. “You don’t believe me?” he taunted. “Fortunately, there are surveillance cameras all over the shopping mall. Go ahead and check the footage yourself.”
Marco hesitated. The idea of surveillance footage made him pause, but the doubt it cast on his sister’s version of events gnawed at him. He turned his gaze toward Marina, who had grown visibly uncomfortable.
Sweat dotted Marina’s forehead as she realized the altercation had been caught on camera. She could already feel the weight of her lies catching up to her.
“Marco, don’t believe him! I didn’t do anything wrong! He’s Loraine’s sugar daddy, so of course, he’s taking her side! They’re lying!” Marina exclaimed, her voice rising in panic.
The mention of “sugar daddy” immediately shifted Marco’s focus. His brows knitted together as he turned his attention to Cayson, his tone darker now.
“What’s your relationship with her, Cayson? This matter is between me and Loraine. Why do you think you have the right to speak up?”
Cayson, however, remained unfazed, his expression stoic. “I have every right to do so because Loraine is an employee of Universe Group. As the CEO, it’s my duty to protect my employees at any given opportunity.”
Marco scoffed, disbelief lacing his voice. “So, you’re doing this just because she’s your employee?” He raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. “Do you think I’m dumb? I don’t believe that lame excuse of yours!”
A boss wouldn’t go out of his way to take an employee shopping and defend her in public like this. It was too obvious to Marco that there was more to the situation than Cayson was letting on. Only someone truly naive would buy that excuse.
