Chapter 84
“Nonsense!” Marco interjected, his voice filled with concern. “It’s too dangerous.”
He knew Slater’s obsession with racing all too well. The man drove like a madman, and Loraine could easily get hurt if she competed with him.
But to Marco’s surprise, Loraine and Jennie exchanged a look and then burst out laughing.
“Okay, deal!” Loraine replied with confidence.
The group moved outside the bar and onto an empty street. Slater ran his fingers lovingly along the sleek body of his beloved Bugatti Veyron, almost as if it were a lover he had to protect. He was certain that he would easily defeat Loraine with his car, and he was eager to use this race as an opportunity to teach her a lesson.
With a smug grin, he looked at her. “A simple race would be boring. How about we make it more interesting with a bet?”
Loraine, without hesitation, raised an eyebrow. “Okay. What do you want to bet?”
Slater rubbed his hands together, clearly enjoying himself. “If you lose, you have to publicly admit that you relied on men to get to this position. What do you say?”
Everyone’s faces shifted in surprise.
The stakes were high. If Loraine agreed to such a bet, her entire reputation could be ruined.
Marco frowned deeply, his eyes darting between Loraine and Slater, but before he could speak, Loraine cut him off with a sharp, confident reply.
“Okay, you got it. I’ll do as you say!” she said firmly, her gaze never leaving Slater’s face.
Her eyes drifted to the gleaming silver-blue Bugatti Veyron, and a sly smile tugged at her lips. Slater’s grin widened, pleased with her quick agreement.
“What’s your end of the bargain?” she asked, her tone cool and composed. “I like your car. It’s nice. If you lose, you have to give it to me. Do you agree to the bet?”
Slater’s heart skipped a beat. He glanced nervously at his prized car, then at Loraine’s ordinary white Audi. He let out a quiet sigh of relief—he was confident that his superior vehicle and skill would guarantee his victory.
“Okay, let’s bet,” he said, trying to mask his unease.
