Chapter 36
“No, thanks. I don’t need your protection. I’ll rise on my own abilities at work. I don’t need you to pull any strings for me,” Loraine said firmly.
Barry’s expression darkened as he registered her refusal. His frown deepened, frustration evident on his face.
“Loraine, are you really turning down my offer? You should be grateful I’m even interested in you. Why are you acting so proud? Oh, is it because Mr. Benton recognized your talent during the interview?” He sneered. “Let me remind you, you can’t afford to be arrogant at Universe Group. If you don’t play by the rules, you won’t make it through the probation period.”
The veiled threat in his words made Loraine’s lip curl into a bitter smile.
Was this really happening? On her first day at work, she was already being sexually harassed by her boss? She couldn’t believe it.
Barry was making a huge mistake. She would make sure he regretted this.
Meanwhile, on the second floor of Fwell Bar, Marco and his friends had gathered in a private room, drinking and chatting.
“You’re finally free, bro! Got rid of that country bumpkin you were married to. This calls for a celebration. Let’s get drunk tonight!” Slater Lee, a handsome man with a carefree attitude, clapped Marco on the shoulder, holding a glass of wine in his other hand.
Marco shrugged off his hand with an expression of disgust, finishing his drink in one gulp. His mood was darker than the room.
“Cut the crap, Slater,” Marco muttered.
On the other side of the room, Jimmie, another friend of Marco’s, sat with an air of sophistication. He wore a suit that contrasted sharply with the chaotic bar around them, and he adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses as he spoke.
“Slater, stop. Marco doesn’t need to hear your nonsense,” he said, shaking his head with disapproval.
Slater pouted, clearly not pleased. “What? I didn’t say anything wrong! Our friend here was trapped in that marriage with Loraine, a woman who didn’t deserve him. She’s a parasite. It’s a relief that he’s divorced now!”
Jimmie sighed, shaking his head again, as though in disappointment.
“Marco, don’t listen to him. Life wasn’t easy for Loraine during those years. Now that you’re divorced, you should pay her proper alimony,” he said gently.
Slater scoffed. “Don’t give her anything! Don’t listen to Jimmie. She sucked the life out of you for three whole years, and right after the divorce, she’s already with Cayson. She’s a slut! You don’t owe her anything, not a single penny!”
“Enough!” Marco snapped, slamming his glass down on the table, the loud noise cutting through the conversation like a knife.
