Chapter 33
How could he have missed it all?
Marco’s anger simmered, and he could no longer hold back. He fixed his gaze on his sister, who stood with her head lowered in shame. “And you said you did nothing wrong?”
“Marco, I can explain!” Marina pleaded, reaching out to touch him.
“Shut up! There’s nothing to explain here!” Marco snapped, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. “You’d better go and apologize to Loraine. Otherwise, you won’t see a single penny from me again.”
“What?” Marina’s mouth hung open in disbelief. She couldn’t believe it. Her brother, who had always been so protective of her, was now threatening to cut her off if she didn’t apologize to his ex-wife. This only fueled her rebellious streak.
“No way! I will never apologize to that bitch!” With those words, Marina stormed out of the control room, her footsteps echoing down the hall.
Marco didn’t follow her. Instead, his eyes remained fixed on Loraine’s face in the video. Guilt washed over him again, this time more intensely than ever.
How had he not seen it? How had he let Loraine suffer all these years, right under his nose?
But then, a question nagged at him. Why hadn’t she told him? Why had she kept all of it from him while they were married? She never shared her pain, never let him in. And now, even after their divorce, she still kept things hidden. She hadn’t even told him she needed a job. If she had, he could have pulled some strings for her. Why did she have to go to Cayson instead?
The thought of Cayson playing the role of Loraine’s knight in shining armor only made Marco feel more irritated. He couldn’t shake the image of Cayson, so protective and caring toward her.
Frustrated, Marco pulled out his phone and dialed Carl’s number.
“Get me an insider at Universe Group,” Marco ordered as soon as Carl picked up. “Keep an eye on Loraine for me.”
“Why? Did something happen?” Carl’s voice was laced with curiosity.
“Nothing. Just do as I say,” Marco replied, trying to calm himself. “I just want her to be safe, even though we’re divorced.”
