Chapter 41
“Go through these documents. They’re for the children’s park project we’re working on. It’s your first project here!” Barry said, his smile wide but insincere.
Loraine felt a wave of disgust wash over her at the sight of his grin, but she kept her expression neutral, maintaining control over her emotions.
Jolie, who had been overhearing the exchange, couldn’t help but speak up. She glanced at the stack of documents and raised an eyebrow. “Mr. Gray, Loraine is still a newbie. Why would you hand her such a complicated project? Don’t you think it’s a bit much for her?”
Loraine stood up, her eyes narrowing slightly as she addressed Jolie. “Jolie, what’s wrong? Is there something about this project that I should know?”
Jolie, visibly frustrated, gestured toward the documents. “The proposed design for the children’s park is complicated. It’s going to take a long time to finish. And the project was assigned to Eliza’s team more than a month ago.” She shot a sharp look at Barry, adding, “Why are you making Loraine handle it alone?”
Barry’s smile faltered for a moment. He wasn’t expecting such a direct confrontation from Jolie, and it caught him off guard. His temper flared briefly at the reminder of how things had gone down the night before. He was still furious about the humiliation he’d suffered, but he knew he had to be careful.
He needed to make Loraine’s life difficult, but he couldn’t afford to act too rashly. Cayson had personally hired her, and the fact that she was Marco’s ex-wife made things even trickier. Despite his personal animosity toward her, he couldn’t risk angering Cayson or Marco.
Still, he wasn’t about to back down from his plan to sabotage her quietly.
With a sneer, he waved off Jolie’s concerns. “You don’t know anything, Jolie! Executing the project isn’t that difficult. I gave it to Loraine to help her develop her skills faster. She’ll thank me later.”
“But—” Jolie began, clearly about to protest again, but Loraine raised a hand, stopping her.
“Forget it,” Loraine said calmly, looking at Barry without a hint of emotion. “I’ll take over the project.”
Jolie looked at Loraine, her surprise evident. “Loraine!” she exclaimed, clearly concerned.
Barry’s lips twisted into a malicious smile. “That’s what I’m talking about! Young people nowadays are so decisive. Don’t let me down, Loraine.”
His words dripped with sarcasm, but Loraine ignored him, turning her attention to the stack of documents in front of her. She was determined to show him that she wouldn’t be intimidated.
The children’s park project was indeed a complex one. It required careful thought and planning—everything from the overall concept to the division of functions, specification standards, equipment, materials, tourist psychology, and economic benefits. There were so many factors to consider that it was enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed.
But Loraine wasn’t going to let Barry or anyone else make her doubt her abilities. She dove into the project headfirst, determined to prove herself, even if it meant dealing with this underhanded scheme.
