Chapter 4
Loraine tumbled down several flights of stairs, her body battered with each violent impact. Finally, she came to a crushing stop on the floor below.
The repeated blows to her head left her dizzy and disoriented, a deep gash opening on her scalp as blood began to pour from the wound. Pain shot through her body, and the world around her blurred. Her vision flickered, then dimmed, until everything faded to black.
Just as the darkness closed in, she saw Marco rushing toward her. But instead of stopping to help her, he walked right past her, his gaze focused on Keely. Without a second glance, he scooped Keely into his arms and carried her away, leaving Loraine to lie alone in a pool of her own blood.
In the Hospital
“You can’t go in there, miss! The patient is still very weak and needs rest!” a nurse shouted, her voice filled with authority.
“Get out of my way! I know Loraine is in there. You can’t stop me!” Marina Bryant’s voice cut through the air, sharp and insistent.
Loraine struggled to open her eyes, the sound of a heated exchange pulling her from the depths of her unconscious state. She turned her head slowly and saw Marina pushing past the nurse, her eyes blazing with fury. Marina stormed toward her, her steps heavy and filled with purpose.
“Loraine, you vile woman!” Marina spat, her gaze filled with venom. “Keely has been struggling with her recovery. How dare you push her down the stairs! Just wait—Marco won’t let you get away with this!”
Weak and barely able to hold herself up, Loraine forced herself to sit, her body trembling with exhaustion. “I didn’t push her,” she whispered, her voice hoarse. “She pushed me.”
Marina sniffed disdainfully, her expression hardening. “No one will believe your lies. Keely comes from a rich family. Why would she hurt someone like you, a lowly country girl? You’re just jealous because my brother loves her, and you want her dead. Well, that’s not going to happen!”
Loraine’s heart sank as she realized there was no one to defend her. Desperation clawed at her, and she searched for any way to prove her innocence. But in that moment, she could think of nothing.
Then, Marco entered the room. His face was tight with frustration, his eyes distant. When Loraine saw him, a small spark of hope ignited within her. He was her last hope, the only one who could help her.
“Marco, I didn’t hurt Keely. Please believe me!” she cried, her voice pleading.
But Marco only looked down at her coldly, his expression unreadable. His voice was strained when he spoke, as if the words caused him pain.
“Loraine, that’s enough,” he said dismissively. “I don’t want to hear your excuses. Wrongdoings deserve punishment.”
He paused, his gaze flicking to Marina. “Keely’s kidney was seriously damaged in the fall. And you, Loraine… you’re the only match.”
Loraine’s eyes widened in shock, her breath catching in her throat.
“Yes!” Marina shouted triumphantly. “You damaged Keely’s kidney, so you should compensate her with one of yours!”
Loraine’s world tilted in disbelief, her mind struggling to process what was happening.
Before she could respond, Marina barked at the bodyguards standing nearby.
“Take her to the operating room!” she ordered, her voice firm.
