Chapter 57
The Loraine Keely knew had always been a weakling, someone who never chased after her own goals. This new Loraine, however, was an enigma to her.
Keely put on a worried expression.
“Are you serious, Mr. Benton? Loraine was so poor she couldn’t even afford to go to school as a child. After she married Marco, she lived off him. How could it be possible—”
“Enough!” Marco snapped, his face darkening.
Loraine scoffed, looking at the two of them in front of her with a bemused expression.
“Go ahead, Keely. Finish what you were about to say.” Her voice was calm, but her eyes were sharp. “Marco, I remember sending you the bank card along with the divorce papers. The money you gave me was untouched. Why don’t you let this oblivious woman know that I never spent a single penny of your money?”
“That’s impossible!” Keely shot back instantly.
“Loraine, how dare you claim you never spent any of Marco’s money during your three-year marriage?”
“Stop it, Keely. She’s telling the truth,” Marco interjected firmly.
His gaze turned toward Loraine as he continued, “You shouldn’t have returned the money, Loraine. You were once my wife. It only makes sense you’d use it. Anyway, I haven’t touched the money or changed the password. If you need it, I can give you the card back.”
The offer was tempting, and no woman in her right mind would refuse it. But Loraine was disgusted.
She didn’t care about Marco’s money. She hadn’t married him for it, nor had she relied on him for her living expenses. Now that she was free of him and had a successful career, why would she go back to that? Did he think she would jump at the chance? It was almost laughable.
“No, thanks,” she said without hesitation. “I don’t need your money. I’m no longer your wife. Besides, it won’t be long before I make more money than you. My career is soaring, in case you haven’t noticed.”
Her words struck like a dagger. Keely’s eyes narrowed, and she bristled at Loraine’s confidence. To her, Loraine was just another woman who liked to brag, pretending to be more than she was.
“Loraine, stop pretending,” Keely sneered. “Working in an architectural company doesn’t pay that well. You’ll never make half of Marco’s fortune, no matter how hard you work for the rest of your life. I majored in architecture at university, so I know how difficult it is to design something on the scale of an amusement park. It’s a miracle that you managed to design it, considering you never even went to college. But mark my words, you can’t rely on luck forever. One day, you’ll be stranded.”
Loraine’s eyes flashed with determination. She didn’t want to engage with someone as delusional as Keely, but she couldn’t let her go unchallenged.
“I don’t like arguing with delusional women like you. All I’ll say is that you’ll know if my success is based on luck once the project is completed.”
