Chapter 17
Loraine looked at him, her eyes wide in surprise, but she remained silent.
“I’m fired? Why?” Vickie asked, her voice trembling with disbelief.
Cayson didn’t flinch. “Isn’t it obvious? An interviewer is supposed to be unbiased and fair. However, you were malicious while interviewing this job seeker. You almost caused Universe Group to lose a valuable talent. We don’t need employees like you here.”
His voice was firm and unyielding. The two other interviewers remained silent, unwilling to intervene, knowing well that they didn’t want to become entangled in the fallout.
Vickie’s face flushed with a mix of devastation and fury. She couldn’t accept being fired because of Loraine. Jealousy and anger bubbled up inside her as she glared at Loraine, who was still as calm and composed as ever.
“This woman isn’t a talent!” Vickie yelled, her voice rising with frustration. “I won’t accept this!”
Cayson scoffed, his expression unwavering. “She just solved a big problem that had been plaguing the architectural design department for a month. That’s enough proof that she’s talented. She’s exactly the kind of brain we need here.”
Vickie opened her mouth to retort, but no words came out. She staggered backward, her hand gripping the edge of the table for support. It finally sank in—she had dug her own grave. Everything had backfired spectacularly.
Desperation took over. “Mr. Benton, I’m sorry! Please, let me off with just a warning this time! I’ve worked hard for this company for years!”
But to her dismay, her pleas fell on deaf ears. Without a word, Cayson snapped his fingers. Moments later, a group of security guards entered, escorting her out of the room.
The tension that had lingered among the other interviewers immediately dissipated. They all looked at each other in silence, their minds now clear, and the interview was brought to a swift close.
Loraine walked out of the office, her heart lighter. With her skills and her ability to stand up for herself, she had secured a position in the architectural design department of Universe Group.
As she stepped outside the building, a car screeched to a halt in front of her, and the familiar face of Cayson Benton appeared through the window.
“Welcome back, Lorrie,” he said with a warm, gentle smile.
Loraine felt a wave of relief and happiness wash over her at the sight of him. “Long time no see, Cayson. Thanks for helping me back there,” she said, her mood instantly lifted.
“Oh, it was nothing,” Cayson replied, his smile widening. “Don’t be so formal. Have you forgotten that you used to boss me around when we were kids?”
Loraine’s heart softened, and the memories of their childhood came flooding back. She couldn’t help but smile as she remembered the playful times they had shared. It was a comfort to know that some things never changed.
