Chapter 90
“You asked for it. Besides, the cold wind will do you good. It’ll help sober you up,” Marco said, his voice cold as he drove away, leaving Slater standing alone in the freezing wind.
Slater stood there, shivering, his anger burning brighter with every passing second. Not only had he lost the race and his car, but now his so-called friends had abandoned him. His fists clenched, and he let out an angry roar. “Loraine, just wait and see. You better stay out of my way, or I’ll teach you a lesson!”
A few days later, news broke that Universe Group had secured a major government contract, sending shockwaves through the business world. As the company’s stock price soared, Loraine’s fame skyrocketed. But with her rise came scrutiny. People began digging into her past, uncovering the details of her divorce from Marco, and how she had joined forces with his business rival to take away a project that Marco had once fought for.
The drama quickly became the talk of the town, and for several days, Loraine’s name dominated headlines and social media feeds.
Marco’s phone rang, the caller ID showing his mother’s name: Laura Bryant. He groaned, his patience already wearing thin.
“Marco, what’s happening?” Laura’s voice was sharp and demanding. “Didn’t you divorce Loraine? How is she involved in our project?”
Irritated, Marco rubbed his temples, his frustration growing. “It’s a long story, Mom.”
“Tell me the truth,” Laura snapped. “Did she threaten you with the project so that she was willing to divorce you? How much money did she get from you?”
Marco’s face darkened with every word. His mother’s disgust for Loraine was palpable, and it only made him more defensive. “It’s not what you think. Loraine didn’t ask for anything. She won the project fairly.”
“She made it on her own? No way!” Laura exclaimed, disbelief dripping from her voice. “She doesn’t even deserve to be a servant of our family. She married up and changed her fate. Her true colors should’ve been revealed after the divorce. Don’t go gentle on her just because she’s your ex-wife. Get that project back as soon as—”
“Mom,” Marco cut her off, his voice sharp. “This is business, not a game. The project is now Loraine’s. How am I supposed to get it back from her?”
“Why not?” Laura’s voice was cold, calculating. “That bitch has benefited plenty from you over the last three years of your marriage. There’s nothing wrong with asking her to return the project. Besides, who knows what valuables she’s taken from our family since your divorce?”
Marco winced at her words, but Laura wasn’t finished. “I need to check everything now!”
