Chapter 59
“Keely, you claim to be a graduate, but it seems like you wasted the money of whoever sent you to college,” Loraine said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “You must have been a terrible student if you don’t even know the basics. Tsk.”
Cayson, who had been silently observing, echoed her words with a grin. “It seems real ability is worth more than fake education, wouldn’t you agree?”
The room erupted into laughter as they turned their attention to the mortified Keely. It was clear to everyone who the smarter one was now.
Tears welled up in Keely’s red eyes, but she was at a loss for words. She had never been so humiliated in her life. If she hadn’t been so focused on maintaining a prim and proper image in front of Marco, she would have lunged at Loraine in rage.
Loraine, however, didn’t find any joy in Keely’s humiliation. In the past, she would have relished putting her in her place, but now, she was indifferent. These two were insignificant to her. She had bigger things to focus on.
With a final, dismissive glance at Keely, Loraine turned and walked away, holding her head high. Cayson followed closely behind.
Marco felt a heavy weight in his chest as he watched them walk off together, hand in hand. His face betrayed the sadness that churned inside him, but he didn’t know how to fix it.
Keely, however, didn’t seem to notice his discomfort. She was too caught up in her own embarrassment and frustration.
“Marco, why didn’t you defend me just now?” she complained, her voice a mixture of hurt and anger. “You know I’ve been receiving treatment abroad since I graduated. The medication affected my health, and it made me forget things. These people don’t know what I’ve been through, but they’re laughing at me!”
She tried to play the victim, as though she were the one being wronged. But Marco, exhausted by her drama, had had enough. He pulled his hand away from hers, his expression cold.
“Keely,” he said, his tone stern, “do you think I’m stupid? You brought this on yourself. Loraine only gave you a taste of your own medicine. Don’t try to play the victim now. If you don’t stop, I’ll treat you as a stranger, even though you were once engaged to Jorge.”
Keely’s heart skipped a beat. The threat in his voice made her feel a jolt of fear.
“I’m sorry, Marco,” she muttered quickly, trying to salvage the situation. “I was just thinking about those innocent lives at risk if Loraine uses substandard materials. It’s my duty as a member of society to ask important questions. I’ll be more careful in the future.”
But Marco’s frown didn’t soften. His voice remained unwavering.
“You’re not the one you need to apologize to. Go apologize to Loraine.”
