Chapter 12
Suddenly, the door to Marco’s office opened, and his assistant entered, holding a document.
“Mr. Bryant, this is from your wife. She requested you sign it in person.”
Marina, who had been watching Marco closely, rolled her eyes disdainfully. “See? I was right! She hasn’t even been gone for long, but already her true colors are showing. She’s unable to support herself, so now she’s sucking up to you. What she said about divorce is all fake!”
Marco didn’t respond to her taunting. Instead, he opened the package in his hands with a slow, deliberate motion.
As he did, a bank card slipped out, followed by the divorce agreement. Loraine’s signature was already neatly scrawled across the document.
Marina’s eyes widened, her mouth falling open as she caught sight of the divorce papers.
“Does Loraine really want a divorce?” she gasped, her voice tinged with disbelief.
A thought suddenly struck Marina, and her expression darkened. “Marco, does she want to divorce you so she can take half of your property? You can’t let that happen. Don’t sign the papers!”
Marco, still in a daze, stared down at the document. Mixed emotions swirled in his chest. “On the contrary, she doesn’t want anything from me,” he muttered under his breath.
Marina’s confusion was palpable. “Huh? That’s impossible!”
She snatched the document from his hands, eyes scanning the pages as though searching for a mistake. Then she froze. One of the clauses in the agreement clearly stated that Loraine was willing to give up any property that was supposed to be awarded to her as alimony.
Marina blinked in disbelief, her heart racing. The document was already signed by Loraine.
After a moment of stunned silence, Marina’s face lit up with a wicked smile. The shock wore off, and her excitement bubbled up uncontrollably. “This is great, Marco! Since you don’t have to give her a penny, you should divorce her as soon as possible. Then you can marry Keely!”
The thought of Loraine being out of the picture, of Marco being free to marry Keely, thrilled Marina. She savored the idea of Loraine’s misery after the divorce, imagining her downfall. But she didn’t notice Marco’s face darkening with every passing second.
“Shut up!” Marco barked, his voice cold and filled with authority. “Get out!”
He turned to Carl, his bodyguard, without sparing Marina another glance. “Take her out. And tell security that she’s not allowed back in here without my permission.”
Marina stood frozen for a moment, shocked by the sudden shift in her brother’s demeanor. “Marco! Why are you doing this to me? I’m your sister!”
But Marco, no longer in the mood for any of her antics, didn’t answer. His attention remained fixed on the divorce papers as Carl ushered Marina out of the room.
As the door slammed shut, the office fell into a heavy silence. Marco sat back in his chair, the weight of the moment pressing down on him. His thoughts were a chaotic storm, swirling with frustration, confusion, and a deep, nagging sense of loss.
The divorce papers were signed, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was slipping out of his control. He thought he understood his marriage, understood Loraine. But now, with her walking away so easily—without asking for anything, without fighting for anything—it felt like he was losing not just a wife, but everything he thought he had built.
