Chapter 56
“Cayson, get your hand off her,” Marco snapped, his voice laced with fury. “You’re the CEO of Universe Group. What do you think you’re doing, touching your employee like that? Don’t you think it’s inappropriate?”
Marco’s fists were clenched tight, his knuckles white with the effort to hold back. The urge to confront Cayson physically was strong, but he forced himself to remain composed.
“What’s wrong with what I’m doing?” Cayson replied nonchalantly, his tone smooth. “I’m not the CEO tonight. I’m just Lorrie’s date.”
Cayson purposefully pulled Loraine even closer to him, positioning himself as her knight in shining armor.
Loraine froze, her body tense. She wanted to break free from his embrace, but before she could act on it, she caught sight of Cayson’s wink. The subtle hint was unmistakable. Realizing the situation, Loraine abandoned the thought of pulling away. Instead, she leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder.
The sight of them together, more intimate than ever, only fueled Marco’s anger. His forehead twitched with a vein bulging in frustration.
Seizing the moment, Keely stepped in to stir the pot.
“Mr. Benton,” she said with a pointed smile, “Loraine’s only been with your company for a few weeks, and yet you two are already so close. You’re even her date tonight. Did you know each other before?”
Her gaze narrowed, her suspicion evident. She was insinuating that Loraine and Cayson had been involved even before her divorce. The idea of a CEO lowering himself to date his employee seemed far too suspicious.
Cayson’s smile faded in an instant. His eyes darkened as he met her gaze.
“Watch your mouth,” he warned, his voice low. “Lorrie may have only recently joined us, but in that short time, she’s already secured two massive deals for the company—a resort project and a children’s park project. This party was thrown in her honor, and it’s because she’s earned it.”
He stood taller, his expression hardening with pride. “She’s an exceptionally talented young woman. It’s only right that I show my appreciation for her. I’m not like someone else here, blind to what’s right in front of them. Unlike him,” he added, glancing at Marco, “I actually cherish her.”
The words cut through Marco like a blade.
Loraine had secured two huge deals?
Marco blinked in surprise, then, just as quickly, felt a sharp sting in his chest. The realization hit him harder than he expected. The mocking tone of Cayson’s words finally sank in. He had just been insulted, and the sting of it was raw.
Despite his pride, Marco couldn’t help but acknowledge the truth. Loraine had begun to shine in ways he hadn’t expected. Her beauty, yes, but also her newfound success—it was all so impressive.
Keely, meanwhile, sneered at Cayson’s praise. She wasn’t about to let that go easily.
