Chapter 18
“Fine, I won’t be so formal.”
“That’s what I’m talking about!” Cayson chuckled.
Loraine shook her head, smiling at his playful attitude.
“By the way, how did you know I was coming for an interview here?” she asked, her curiosity piqued.
The smile on Cayson’s face slowly faded when he heard her question. He hesitated for a moment before answering, his tone softening.
“Well, your grandfather told me about what happened to you. I’m sorry you had to go through all that.”
Loraine gave him a reassuring smile. “Let bygones be bygones,” she said with a calm demeanor. “I’m starting over now.”
Despite her words, Cayson’s heart ached for her. Seeing her so composed, yet knowing the pain she had endured, left him conflicted. But since she didn’t want to dwell on her past, he quickly shifted the conversation.
“Hop in! I’ve made a reservation at a restaurant. Let me treat you to a nice meal to welcome you back!” Cayson opened the car door for her with a gentlemanly gesture.
“Nice! I willingly accept your invitation,” Loraine replied, a grin spreading across her face as she got into the car.
After a lovely dinner, Cayson drove her home, and Loraine felt a sense of peace after such a long, exhausting day. She was so tired that, as soon as she got to her bed, she collapsed onto it. The exhaustion quickly swept over her, and just as she was about to drift off, her phone rang.
It was Jennie.
“Loraine, bad news! Check Twitter now. There are negative tweets about you,” Jennie’s voice came through urgently.
Sleep instantly left Loraine’s eyes, and she sat up in bed, wide awake.
“What?” she asked, her voice tense with concern.
Loraine quickly logged onto Twitter and checked the trending topics. Her heart sank when she saw her name at the top of the list. The headline read:
“Marco Bryant’s ex-wife spotted with her new lover just days after divorce!”
Confused, Loraine scrolled down, and to her shock, there were pictures of her with Cayson—taken at the restaurant they had just been to.
The blood drained from her face. What was going on? How had this even happened?
