Chapter 11
“Why not?” Jennie didn’t understand.
Loraine gave a small, thoughtful smile. “Cayson runs the company flawlessly. I don’t want to profit from his efforts.”
Jennie shook her head, unconvinced. “Lorrie, you’re overthinking it. The Torres family’s properties are all yours. Besides, Cayson has been obedient to you since childhood. He won’t object to you joining as vice president.”
Loraine shook her head gently. “But I want to prove myself. I’m going to apply for a job in the company. I’ll start off as a construction designer. Then I’ll train myself up and get a feel for the company.”
Loraine’s voice was firm, confident. She knew exactly what she wanted, and this time, she wasn’t going to rely on anyone else’s expectations or charity.
Jennie’s eyes softened, a smile spreading across her face. The bold and self-assured Loraine she had known was back. “Lorrie, I’m sure you’ll succeed in the business world with all your talent. Then you can trash Marco’s company and make him kneel in front of you!”
Hearing Marco’s name caused a brief, painful chill to run through Loraine’s body. The trauma he had caused her was too deep to be healed in such a short time. She quickly shook her head.
“No, there’s no need for that,” she said indifferently. “I don’t want anything to do with him for the rest of my life.”
Loraine opened a drawer and pulled out a document, pushing thoughts of Marco aside for good.
In Bryant Group, the atmosphere in the CEO’s office was tense. Marina stormed in, her expression furious. “Why did you suspend my card?” she demanded, her voice sharp.
Marco, who had been silently going through a report, didn’t even look up. “To make you reflect on yourself,” he replied coldly, his tone dismissive.
“And what am I supposed to reflect on? Just because Loraine wants a divorce? It’s none of my business!” Marina fumed. “It was Loraine who hurt Keely out of jealousy. I suggested she donate her kidney because I was worried about Keely! Fortunately, Keely is fine. Loraine couldn’t afford for there to be a real injury!”
Marco’s patience was running thin. “Enough!” he snapped, finally raising his head. His eyes narrowed as he met Marina’s gaze. “Loraine is my wife and your sister-in-law. It’s not your place to teach her a lesson.”
Marina scoffed, her arms crossed. “She doesn’t even deserve to be your wife or my sister-in-law!”
Unconvinced, Marina pouted, her voice dripping with disdain. “She said she wanted a divorce? Well, I think she was putting on an act. That sort of woman will cling to our family and try to get more money!”
Marco’s frown deepened. Marina’s words were cutting, but something about them rubbed him the wrong way. Her hatred for Loraine was becoming more obvious by the second.
The silence between them grew thicker, charged with unspoken tension. Marco’s mind wandered to Loraine, to the hurt in her eyes when she left. The way she’d so easily given up on him, on everything they’d built. He still couldn’t understand how she could walk away so decisively, so completely. But now, he had no choice but to deal with the mess his family had created. And it wasn’t just about her anymore— it was about him, his own choices, and how they had led to this point.
“Enough,” Marco muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. He knew that dealing with Marina was just the beginning of fixing everything that had gone wrong. But right now, his thoughts were still tangled with Loraine.
