Chapter 52
“No, I can’t accept this!” Eliza exploded, her voice rising with frustration. She threw a fit, demanding an explanation.
Her outburst didn’t go unnoticed. The news quickly made its way to the senior executives, and it wasn’t long before Lewis Rivera, one of the senior directors, arrived on the scene, his expression calm but authoritative.
“Calm down, everyone,” Lewis said, his voice steady as he addressed the group. “There was no foul play in the decision-making process. The promotion was made according to the company’s rules and the performance reports of the employees.”
Eliza wasn’t buying it. Her eyes narrowed as she crossed her arms, still furious. “Loraine is just a newcomer. I’ve been working here for years. How can she rank higher than me?” she demanded, her voice trembling with indignation.
Lewis gave a small smile, not at all bothered by her outburst. “Eliza, I’d like to remind you that Loraine solved a significant design problem during her interview. That alone earned her more points than you for this year’s performance review.”
Eliza’s jaw dropped. She hadn’t expected that.
Lewis continued, his tone matter-of-fact, “More importantly, Loraine successfully closed the amusement park deal. You know how much that deal is worth. I’m sure you don’t need me to remind you of that.”
Eliza’s face flushed with fury. The amusement park project had originally been hers, but Loraine had swooped in and claimed it. Those two projects—Loraine’s successful interview and the amusement park deal—had catapulted her performance score to the top.
Eliza wanted to challenge the decision, but the facts were clear, and she was left with no ground to stand on. The words of Lewis hit harder than she wanted to admit.
Loraine, who had initially planned to turn down the promotion, felt a shift inside her. It wasn’t just the circumstances; it was the realization that her success had earned her this opportunity. It wasn’t given to her out of pity or favor. She had done it through hard work and skill.
Lewis turned to Loraine with a genuine smile. “Congratulations, Loraine. Keep up the good work.”
Loraine smiled back, grateful but composed. “Thank you, sir. I’ll do my best.”
The tension in the room began to dissipate, and Eliza’s objections, though loud at first, soon fell silent. Most of the other employees were simply relieved that Loraine had been chosen as the new director. They might have had doubts at first due to her being a newcomer, but they couldn’t deny her accomplishments. Loraine had proven herself—she was diligent, approachable, and a far cry from the bossy and manipulative Eliza.
Without hesitation, many of them walked over to congratulate Loraine, offering their sincere well-wishes. The support from her colleagues was a pleasant surprise, and it only solidified her confidence in her ability to lead.
As the congratulations continued, Eliza stood in the background, her fists clenched, her teeth grinding. She was bitter, no doubt, but there was nothing she could do now but accept it. The decision had been made, and Loraine would be her new boss.
Eliza could only grit her teeth and swallow her resentment, forced to silently accept that the tables had turned.
