Chapter 91
Marco’s face darkened as his mother’s words lingered in his mind. He had never realized just how much contempt she held for Loraine. The fact that she had so casually called her a “bitch” in front of him stung. It was clear that Laura had been mean and disrespectful to Loraine when he wasn’t around. A pang of guilt settled in Marco’s chest as he imagined all that Loraine must have endured because of his mother.
Unable to tolerate another word of slander against Loraine, Marco ended the call abruptly. He needed space to process everything, but moments later, his phone rang again.
“Marco, bad news!” Laura’s voice was frantic. “Your study is unlocked. Several documents are missing. Loraine must have taken them! She must have used them to get a job at Universe Group and acquire the project! No wonder she wanted to divorce you — she cheated you!”
Marco was stunned. His heart skipped a beat when he heard that the documents were missing. But despite his mother’s accusations, he didn’t believe for a second that Loraine had stolen them. She wasn’t the type. He was certain he must have misplaced the documents or forgotten to take them to the company.
“Mom, calm down,” Marco said, rubbing his forehead. “I’ll send someone to investigate. Loraine didn’t steal anything.” He paused, thinking of her talent. Loraine wasn’t the kind of person to use shortcuts. “She’s got real skills. She didn’t need those documents to get the project.”
But Laura wouldn’t back down. “Now that you have evidence, who else could have done it besides Loraine? Marco, that woman is a thief! I’m calling the police!”
“No, Mom!” Marco’s voice was firm, and his patience was thinning. “Don’t get involved in this. I can handle it myself.”
Realizing she’d pushed him too far, Laura hesitated. Her frustration was palpable, but she relented, at least for now. “Fine, but I’m not letting this go, Marco.”
As the night wore on, Loraine and Cayson sat together at Flower Restaurant, celebrating their hard-earned victory.
“Congratulations, Lorrie. You’ve done a great job,” Cayson said, raising his glass to her, admiration in his eyes.
Loraine smiled, clinking her glass with his. “Thank you for your support, Cayson,” she replied. She knew that Cayson had taken on a lot of pressure to let her, a newcomer, take charge of such an important project. She was grateful for his trust and for everything he’d done to help her.
The two exchanged a warm, understanding glance, the atmosphere between them harmonious and genuine.
