Chapter 55
A hush fell over the room as the guests processed Keely’s words.
Everyone knew that events like this were reserved for the top one percent of society—no ordinary or lower-class people were invited. Loraine would have been qualified to attend had she still been married to Marco. But now that she was a divorcee, the guests couldn’t help but wonder how she had managed to get in.
Whispers rippled through the crowd. Some guests murmured their disapproval of her presence.
Loraine, however, simply smiled—a playful, knowing smile. Keely hadn’t changed at all. No matter the situation, she still enjoyed belittling her, even in front of so many people.
Loraine tilted her head, her voice calm but firm. “Keely, what do you mean? This party is hosted by my company, Universe Group. Why wouldn’t I be allowed to attend?”
Keely’s face froze as she realized her mistake. She had forgotten that Loraine now worked for Universe Group, and employees were, of course, allowed to attend.
Seeing the hardness in Marco’s face, Keely quickly lowered her eyes and spoke in a hurt tone. “Well, I didn’t mean any harm. I was just concerned about you. After all, you used to be Marco’s wife. I didn’t want you to feel out of place here. You don’t even have a date…”
The words hung in the air, and Loraine’s amusement flared. Was Keely trying to imply that no man wanted to date her?
Before Loraine could respond, a pleasant, deep voice cut through the tension.
“Who says she doesn’t have a date?”
Keely spun around to find a gentleman in a bespoke blue suit making his way toward them with a warm smile. It was none other than Cayson—the host of the banquet.
Cayson walked straight to Loraine and, without hesitation, placed his arm around her slender waist. The two of them looked every bit the elegant, noble couple.
“I’m Lorrie’s date,” Cayson said with a charming smile directed at Loraine.
A collective gasp spread through the hall.
The guests’ eyes were glued to the scene, watching with a mix of curiosity and intrigue. Marco’s gaze hardened, his eyes turning bloodshot as he fixed his gaze on Cayson’s hand around Loraine’s waist. A fierce urge to tear them apart surged within him.
