Chapter 73
“Can you believe Loraine is trying to compete with Marco for the project?” Slater raged.
Keely felt a flicker of relief to know that Slater still disliked Loraine. Even more, she was satisfied to hear that Loraine was challenging Marco over the project.
“Since Marco’s not here, there’s no point in waiting around,” Keely said with a feigned frown, pretending to feel weak. “Slater, Jimmie, I’m not feeling well. Could you drop me home?”
Jimmie seemed to hesitate before responding. “Well, I just remembered I have something important to handle at the law firm. I should leave.” He didn’t want to get caught up in any mess, so he made his quick exit.
Slater didn’t mind driving her home, but a nagging thought lingered: Marco might get upset if he found out.
“Actually…” Slater rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, “I just got a new limited edition car. I’m still getting used to it. Keely, maybe you should have Marco’s assistant take you home instead.”
Without waiting for a response, Slater turned and practically ran off. But he paused, glancing back at her.
“Don’t worry, Keely. I’ll keep an eye on Loraine. I won’t let her get away with this. Bye.”
“Hey!” Keely called after him, her face flushed with frustration as the two of them disappeared down the hall.
Since Loraine had announced her intention to compete with Bryant Group for the smart city project, she had been pushing her team hard. They’d worked tirelessly on several versions of the design plans, and Loraine’s skills had impressed everyone in the architectural design department—except for Eliza.
Eliza wasn’t thrilled with Loraine’s authority and refused to cooperate. She complained constantly about the workload and did everything she could to delay the tasks given to her.
Everyone in the department knew Eliza was slacking, but with the team understaffed, they had no choice but to tolerate her. Eliza picked up on the situation, and her laziness only worsened.
Her behavior continued until the day Loraine called another project meeting. Eliza showed up twenty minutes late.
“I had a stomach ache,” she said nonchalantly as she entered the room. “Hope you understand, Loraine.”
