Chapter 86
The silvery-blue Bugatti Veyron shot forward like a bullet, leaving Loraine’s Audi far behind. The gap between them widened with every passing second, the roar of the engine and the screeching tires filling the night air.
Loraine’s Audi struggled to keep pace, but she didn’t let up. Marco, in his black Ford, followed closely behind, his eyes fixed on Loraine’s car. His concern for her safety was palpable, but there was nothing he could do except watch from a distance.
“Loraine, it’s not too late! You can quit now,” Marco shouted, his voice barely audible over the wind and the sound of the engines. “Don’t worry about the bet. I’ll talk to Slater!”
But Loraine didn’t hear him. Her focus was locked on the road ahead, her hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. The adrenaline surged through her veins, and her heart raced in rhythm with the engine’s growl. She didn’t even glance at Marco.
The wind howled past her, but inside, everything was clear. This was the thrill she had been missing—the freedom, the power, the raw excitement of the race. For so long, she had been bogged down by the weight of her failed marriage, by the years of being defined by someone else’s expectations. But in this moment, she was alive again. She was herself.
Loraine pushed the Audi harder, keeping her eyes fixed on the Bugatti. Then, just as she predicted, a turn appeared up ahead. Her eyes lit up with determination.
She slammed her foot down on the gas, pushing the car to its limits. The Audi swerved with precision as she took the corner, the tires screeching in protest but holding steady.
Slater, still ahead and cocky with his lead, didn’t expect what came next. He heard the familiar sound of another car catching up, but when he looked in the rearview mirror, the white Audi was right on his tail.
His confidence faltered as he gritted his teeth and tried to accelerate even harder. But when he took the same turn, the Bugatti fishtailed slightly, losing some control. He fought with the steering wheel, desperate to keep up, but in that moment of distraction, Loraine shot past him.
Her Audi surged ahead, gracefully rounding the bend and leaving Slater’s car in the dust. Slater’s jaw dropped, his disbelief written all over his face. He couldn’t fathom how she had pulled it off.
Even Marco, watching the entire race unfold, felt his breath catch in his throat. He had been following Loraine the entire time, but now, seeing her overtaking Slater with such skill, he couldn’t help but be impressed. The competitive spark within him flared to life, as he wondered just how much Loraine had been holding back all these years.
