Chapter 71
“I mean, you never paid attention to Loraine when you were married.”
Marco was momentarily taken aback by the comment, but he chose to remain silent.
Slater’s brows shot up, a realization dawning on him. “Wait! The smart city project? Aren’t you in charge of that? Is Loraine involved in it too? How dare she compete with you? What does she think she’s doing?”
The more Slater thought about it, the more his suspicions grew. “Is she trying to get your attention this way?”
Marco’s frown deepened at the insinuation.
But Slater, oblivious to Marco’s growing tension, continued with his tirade. “How could Cayson let some unqualified country girl like Loraine take charge of such an important project? Has he lost his mind? She’s probably manipulated him into it. Wow, I totally underestimated her. She’s more calculating than I thought. Honestly, it’s a relief you divorced her.”
Marco’s irritation flared at the degrading comments about Loraine.
“That’s enough!” Marco’s voice was cold and sharp. “If you’re going to waste your time talking about others, maybe you should go back to your company and actually do something productive.”
His eyes darkened, and the chilling tone in his voice made Slater recoil, immediately falling silent.
Just then, Carl knocked on the door before entering.
“Mr. Bryant, Miss Haywood is here. Would you like me to bring her in?”
Without a second thought, Marco shook his head.
“No, she’s injured from the fall. Tell her to rest and not come unless there’s something important.”
For a moment, Jimmie and Slater stared at Marco, stunned. They couldn’t believe what they’d just heard.
“Marco, you and Keely…” Slater started to ask, but Jimmie quickly slapped a hand over his mouth, cutting him off.
“Marco, since you’re clearly busy, we won’t disturb you any longer,” Jimmie said, pulling Slater out of the office.
