Chapter 49
Eliza’s heart sank as she stared at the design plan Nate held. It wasn’t hers—it was Loraine’s.
“This isn’t my design,” Eliza quipped, her eyebrows knitting in disbelief.
Nate looked up, his expression confused. “It’s not yours?”
Eliza quickly nodded and hurried to explain. “Well, yes, I’m the designer in charge of the amusement park project, but this isn’t the plan I submitted. You must have picked up the wrong one.”
A deep frown formed on Nate’s face. He wasn’t used to being accused of mistakes, especially not when it came to something as important as the project design.
“Are you implying I made a mistake? What do you take me for?” Nate’s voice had a bite to it now.
Realizing she had offended him, Eliza backpedaled quickly, adjusting her tone to something more measured and polite. “Sir, I didn’t mean to imply that. Please, don’t misunderstand me. It’s just that the plan you have in your hands—it wasn’t mine. It was designed by a newcomer named Loraine Torres. It was never approved by the director. My design was the one that was supposed to be presented.”
Eliza’s face turned to one of calculated sweetness as she tried to manipulate the situation in her favor. “That’s why I’m surprised. It’s against the company’s rules for someone like Loraine to submit her own plan to you without going through the proper channels. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to settle for hers.”
Nate glanced at her coolly, his expression hardening. “We got the previous plan, yes, but it wasn’t right. The project was delayed because it had been revised too many times. The construction team has been waiting for far too long. We asked your department to send us all the design plans. After reviewing them carefully, we chose this one—it’s the best.”
Eliza’s eyes widened in shock. “That’s not possible! How could a newbie’s design plan, which was put together in just two weeks, be better than mine?”
Nate slapped the table with a sudden sharpness that made Eliza flinch.
“Mind your words, Miss Welch,” he said, his voice ice-cold. “The design you submitted lacked creativity and originality. You essentially copied concepts from other amusement parks. On the other hand, Miss Torres’ design was unique, engaging, and truly innovative. It appeals to people of all ages, and it takes safety concerns into account, something your design completely overlooked. She even provided detailed instructions on equipment installation—something your plan lacked entirely.”
Every word Nate spoke felt like a slap to Eliza’s face. Her confidence quickly unraveled, and she could feel the blood drain from her face. She had no idea how to respond. Her plan, which she thought was perfect, was being torn apart by someone who had actually studied the designs.
Nate’s words echoed in the silence of the room as he dismissed her coldly. “Instead of badmouthing others, maybe you should work on improving your own abilities. Please leave, and bring Miss Torres here.”
Eliza stood frozen for a moment, stunned by the turn of events. It felt like the ground had been pulled out from under her, and she was left standing there, powerless. With a final glance at Nate, she turned and stormed out of the room, her mind swirling with disbelief and rage.
Loraine, on the other hand, was about to walk into the meeting room. She had no idea what was coming, but she felt a wave of calm determination wash over her. This was her moment, and nothing would take it away from her.
