Chapter 82
Loraine turned around and found Slater glaring at her.
“Slater?” she asked, her brow furrowing as memories of their past came rushing back.
The man who had approached her earlier, noticing Slater in his lavish outfit, quickly backed away, disappearing into the crowd.
Slater stepped forward, standing tall in front of Loraine, his eyes sizing her up. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t find a single flaw in her appearance. The more he looked at her, the angrier he became.
“Don’t get too comfortable, Loraine,” Slater sneered. “You’re just an orphan from the countryside, and you were married to Marco for only three years. Suddenly, after the divorce, you become an architect? Something doesn’t add up. Just wait. I’ll expose your true colors sooner or later.”
Loraine’s lips curled into a sarcastic smile. Slater’s words didn’t surprise her; after all, he was Marco’s friend, and she knew how little they thought of her.
Slater’s sudden appearance brought back unpleasant memories of the past, and Loraine couldn’t help but snap back, “Why can’t I be happy? I’ve worked hard to get here. This success is the result of my own efforts. What do you know about hard work, Slater? You only rely on your family.”
Slater’s face turned red with fury. “What did you say? Do you mean to tell me I’m inferior to a divorced, abandoned woman like you?”
“Abandoned woman?” Loraine shot him a disdainful look. “Slater, watch your mouth. I dumped Marco. He’s the one who got abandoned.”
At that moment, Marco and Jimmie arrived, hearing the last part of her words.
Jimmie bit his lip to suppress his laughter, but Marco’s face darkened, his heart sinking with a wave of sadness.
Loraine’s frown deepened when she saw Marco standing behind Slater. She was growing increasingly annoyed at how she kept running into him everywhere she went.
Sensing the tension in the air, Jimmie quickly tried to lighten the mood. “It’s been so long since we’ve seen each other. Don’t start arguing now. How have you been, Loraine?”
Loraine scoffed, crossing her arms. “I’m doing great, thanks to someone. But it seems like I have flies buzzing around me all the time. It’s getting a bit annoying, you know?”
Marco’s face flushed red. He understood perfectly well that she was referring to him as one of those “flies.”
